Great Blue Heron
It was an early morning summer day. But for the birdsongs and muffled sounds of light traffic, I felt enveloped in a quiet, calm stillness. Being in nature does that for me. The sun was bright and warm as I stepped onto the trail and began walking across the boardwalk over the wetlands. A distinctive shape in the tall grassy area not too far away caught my attention. I slowly stopped to investigate and there she was. A Great Blue Heron. Now these are tall birds. They grow to 4 feet tall with a 6 to 7 foot wingspan. She was as still as a statue. With her subtle blue-gray plumage she blended in well with the surroundings.
I waited and watched as she majestically rose up from the marsh, into the air with legs dangling and wings beating slowly and deeply. As her slender form ascended even higher, I noticed her neck tucked into the most graceful s-shape. I could not take my eyes away. I was in awe. Such an amazing sight to behold. Blue Herons can stand motionless for very long periods of time as they scan for food. To me they represent quiet contemplation, self determination and lots of patience. When we follow the promptings of our heart, we soar. Nature nurtures. Love and Light, Jeanne
